History
Shetland Sheepdogs “Shelties” evolved from hardy ancestors which lived on the Shetland Islands off the northeast coast of Scotland. The Sheltie developed as a hardy herding dog, alert guard dog, and an intelligent and affectionate companion.
Temperament
Shelties have an intense desire to please their owners and an enormous capacity for love and affection. They are outstanding learners and workers in obedience, herding and agility events. Raised as pets they develop a lasting loyalty to their owners. There is very little difference in temperament between male and female.
Training
Early socialization will help develop a friendly outgoing personality. Trips to the park, friend’s house, playground, etc.
Size
Ideal size is between 13 and 16 inches and about 20 to 25 pounds.
Grooming
Depending on the quality of the coat, weekly bushing is all that is needed. Males have more impressive coats.
Care
With proper nutrition and water and regular veterinarian visits, shelties can live to be 14 years old. Keep him/her in a safe and secure area. Shelties enjoy exercise in the form of daily walks and play sessions. They easily adapt to your lifestyle and environment.
Responsible Breeding
Spaying/neutering your Sheltie will prevent unwanted pregnancies, will lessen your dog’s risk of cancer, and will make your companion a better pet.
